I practiced law for 20 years in New Mexico before moving to California with my family. Although I enjoyed the intellectual challenge of practicing law and the interactions with my clients, I feel that teaching is my true calling, and I am looking forward to getting to do what I love!
My undergraduate degree was in Political Science with a minor in Speech Communications, and I taught Business Writing at the Community College level in New Mexico. I love history and reading and writing. So, I have a diverse background in all of the subjects I’m hoping to teach and a real love for those subjects as well. Now, I’m hoping to pass that passion for learning on to a new generation of students!
My Philosophy
Students, and student learning, are my first priority. My goal is to make sure that students leave my classroom with higher expectations of themselves, more knowledge about how to interact effectively with the world, and excitement about learning. In my classroom, this means creating an environment in which students are respected and learning is collaborative and hands-on. Most importantly, every question is a doorway to more learning and deeper understanding!
My educational philosophy tends toward finding balance between the extremes. I believe it is important to teach about history and tradition, and to keep our heritage alive with those traditions. However, I also believe that a progressive education that teaches students to think and to question why we do what we do, is vital to insuring that students become productive and well-adjusted adults in today’s world. With that in mind, I try to choose the best of the old and the new in teaching methods and content so that my students can learn to make those decisions in their own lives.
