Social Justice Action Plan
For my Social Justice Action Plan, I will be showing teachers at San Marcos High School how to use their recently-adopted Illuminate student data system to identify English Learners and Special Needs Students in their classes. This is critical for the teachers so that they can meet these students' needs and give them the support they need for success, but the information is not obviously available on the Illuminate student data system. So, I will write out specific directions on how to do create a form that gives them this information for each class.
Illuminate is a new student data system that was adopted by the San Marcos school district starting in the 2015-16 school year. So, while everybody is learning how to use it, there is an opportunity for the teachers to learn to use this tool to create a form that helps teachers identify the English Learners and Special Needs students in their classes at a glance. My handout will also include:
- step-by-step instructions
- an explanation of what each CELDT level and "RCP" means
- URL link to screencast tutorial put together by another member of our site team
This project meets TPE 15 because I've identified an issue of social justice and equity and designed a solution to the problem. Teachers have difficulty identifying which students may need additional support because they are EL or SN students. This project will help teachers overcome this challenge by making an easily used form in the new student data system that the district is using. In doing this project, I will demonstrate how educators can use technology to provide equitable outcomes for students from different linguistic backgrounds and students with special needs.
